The German Evangelical Lutheran church - In 1859, when the Protestant German population of Pittsfield was about 400, arrangements were made by a portion of them for devine service in their own language. These services were first held in private houses, and with occasional visits by clergymen from New York. But in April, 1859, Rev. Augustus Grotrain, a learned and able minister of Albany, accepted a call, and organized the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Pittsfield. The town subsequently granted a pleasant site in the corner of First street burial-ground, where the church was erected, at a cost of $2,274.00 and which was dedicated September 14, 1865. At the corner of Dexter and Darling streets last night an open air meeting was held under the... of the Socialist-Labor party. The speakers were Edward Theinert of Olneyville and Richard M. Shaw of Central Falls. There was a good attendance and the remarks of the speakers were listened to with evident interest. Mr. Theinert spoke at some length on Socialist principles. He claimed under present conditions it was almost impossible for the working man to make progress. He was forced to exist and did not get the opportunity to live. The wealth of the country was going into the hands of a few and would continue to do so just as long as working men of the company remained inactive and did not attend to their own interests. They supported the Democratic and Republican parties both of whom were controlled by the capitalists and so long as they... they could not reasonably expect legislation that would benefit them, because if they benefited the capitalists would suffer...

'I do believe Louise Johanna lived with the family while at the Morris Avenue farm and did move to Albion. In the May 1, 1965 letter Uncle Ed states that 'when he wrote to his sister Louise, his Dad intercepted the letter and asked him to return home' ...so at what point or why does, Louise Johanna move to Middletown, CT to live with Aunt Anna Slade (Erdman’sister), who is a nurse. One thing, Louise had what was referred to as 'hip disease' and walked with a limp. Perhaps Aunt Anna was to care for her. We do know that Louise’s daughter Elizabeth is born ...Read full story
