THEUNERT Family Tree

What started out as our family is now your’s too!

Augusta Amalie THEUNERT was born 4 November 1823 in Lauban, Silesia, Prussia, Germany

Augusta Amalie THEUNERT was the child of Johann Karl Gottlieb THEUNERT   and   Johanna Rosalie MÄNNIG

Augusta Amalie was an immigrant to the United States, arriving by 1853.

Spouse(s)/Partner(s) and Child(ren):

Augusta Amalie  married  Friedrich Wilhelm ("William") FEIGE abt. 1846 in Marklissa, Silesia, Prussia, Germany .  The couple had (at least) 8 children. Friedrich Wilhelm ("William") FEIGE  was born 7 June 1824 in Marklissa, Silesia, Prussia, Germany (Marklissa, Schlesien, Preußen).  Friedrich Wilhelm ("William") died 9 June 1892 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, USA (Coltsville).  Friedrich Wilhelm ("William") was the child of Johann Gottfried FEIGE and Unknown VOGEL?.

Augusta Amalie THEUNERT died 27 May 1900 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, USA .

Augusta Amalie Theunert was born 4 Nov 1823 in Lauban, Silesia, Prussia. She was baptized 9 Nov 1823 in Lauban. Augusta was the daughter of Johann Karl Gottlieb Theunert and Johanna Rosalie Mennig. Sometime around 1830 or so, Augusta's family moved from Lauban to Marklissa (a few miles South). We suspect that Augusta married Wilhelm Friedrich Feige in Marklissa. Wilhelm Friedrich Feige was the son of Friedrich Wilhelm Feige. His mother is not known. We have been unable to locate the baptism and marriage records from Marklissa, so far. We know they exist, but copies seem to be unavailable in the U.S. We are trying to come up with a plan to get them from either the Polish Archives or directly from the church (assuming it still exists) or town.

Records from Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsfield indicate that Augusta married Wilhelm Friedrich Feige in Prussia in 1845 however, records also show that their first-born child, Augusta Amalie Feige, was born in Marklissa in April of 1844. We are thinking the marriage was probably in Marklissa. The date would be sometime around 1844 or 1845.

Wilhelm and Augusta arrived in New York on December 10, 1853. They traveled on the ship Donau, embarking from Hamburg. Wilhelm was 29 years old. Augusta was 30. They traveled with their 10-year-old daughter, Amalie; 6-year-old twins, Alwine and Louise; and a 4-year-old son, Carl. Augusta’s sister, Maria (age 24), and her husband Augustus Froehlich were also aboard Donau, along with Augusta’s unmarried sisters Henrietta (age 19) and Rosalie (age 27). It appears that the family initially went to Mechanicville, NY in late 1853-1854, although this is not completely proven. By 1855, they were all in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Wilhelm worked in a factory in 1855. In 1860, he is listed as a loom fixer. In 1869, he is a grocer, and by 1880, a farmer, owning property on Churchill Street in the North Woods section of Pittsfield. In 1891, he appears to be working for his son-in-law, at Gimlich & White. He died in Pittsfield on June 9, 1892 at the age of 68. Sometime after Wilhelm’s death, Augusta moved to Auburn, NY to live with her son George and his wife, Charlotte. She returned to Pittsfield before her death on May 27, 1900. She was 76 years old. According to her obituary, Augusta was an active member of Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsfield for many years.

Germans to America 1850-1874
According to “Germans to America 1850-1874”, they traveled on a ship called “Donau”. The ship was also known as “Bark Donau”. The Donau was described as a bark in 1853. Later, it was described as a ship. It was built in 1853 in Altona, a port in the kingdom of Hannover (now part of Hamburg, Germany). The ship was built by Ernst Dreyer for Hamburg-Amerikanische Paketfahrt-Aktiengesellschaft (Hamburg American Line). The certificate of registry was dated June 22, 1853. The ship weighed 533 tons. It measured 139.6 x 31 x 19.6 (length x width x depth of hold) Hamburg feet (1 Hamburg foot = .28657 meters). She sailed almost exclusively on the Hamburg-New York route, although she also sailed to Charleston, SC, in 1858/ 59 and 1859/ 60, to London in 1861, to Hull in 1861 and 1862, and to Philadelphia in 1865. In 1866, she was sold, after having been damaged at sea, to Hall, of Boston, and sailed to Port Louis, Mauritius, as the DRESDEN.

The German Evangelical Lutheran church - In 1859, when the Protestant German population of Pittsfield was about 400, arrangements were made by a portion of them for devine service in their own language. These services were first held in private houses, and with occasional visits by clergymen from New York. But in April, 1859, Rev. Augustus Grotrain, a learned and able minister of Albany, accepted a call, and organized the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Pittsfield. The town subsequently granted a pleasant site in the corner of First street burial-ground, where the church was erected, at a cost of $2,274.00 and which was dedicated September 14, 1865. There present pastor is Rev. John D. Hagar.

1900 - Death of Mrs. Augustus Fiege
Mrs. Augustus Fiege, 76, died Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jacob Gimlich on Columbus avenue. She had been in feeble health for some time, but the illness which caused her death was of only a week's duration. The deceased had been a resident of this city for a great many years and while her health permitted it, she was an active worker in the Lutheran church. Two daughters, Mrs. Jacob Gimlich of this city and Mrs. Frank Shorey of Auburn, N.Y., and two sons, George of Webster, and Henry of this city survive. The funeral will be held from the home of Mrs. Gimlich Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Mr. Genzmer of the Lutheran church will officiate.

1900 - Funeral
The funeral of Mrs. William Feige was largely attended yesterday at the residence of her son-in-law, Jacob Gimlich of Columbus avenue. A quartet from Zion's church sang, and Rev. W. L. Genzmer, who officiated, spoke fittingly of the deceased of her long and useful life, which was full of helpfulness to her family and friends, and of her devotion to the church, and of her consistent Christian work. There were a number of handsome floral tributes, and the burial was in the family lot in the Pittsfield cemetery.
