A quiet and pretty wedding occurred at the home of Francis J. Bourgarde, Jr., 46 Burnside avenue, Oneonta, N.Y., on Thursday, when Mr. Bourgarde and Miss Marie W. Blessing of Meriden, Conn., were united in marriage by Rev. E. J. Farley, of the First Baptist church, at 9 p.m.

The bridesmaid was a sister of the groom, Miss Marie Bourgarde, and the best man was Lewis Bedford. Refreshments were served and an enjoyable evening passed.

The groom is a fireman on the Delaware & Hudson railroad and has many friend in Oneonta, who extend congratulations and good wishes to the couple.

Mr. and Mrs. Bourgarde will reside in Oneonta.

The German Evangelical Lutheran church - In 1859, when the Protestant German population of Pittsfield was about 400, arrangements were made by a portion of them for devine service in their own language. These services were first held in private houses, and with occasional visits by clergymen from New York. But in April, 1859, Rev. Augustus Grotrain, a learned and able minister of Albany, accepted a call, and organized the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Pittsfield. The town subsequently granted a pleasant site in the corner of First street burial-ground, where the church was erected, at a cost of $2,274.00 and which was dedicated September 14, 1865. There present pastor is Rev. John D. Hagar.

1881 - July 2 - James A. Garfield was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C., at 9:30 am on Saturday, July 2, 1881. He died in Elberon, New Jersey, two months later on September 19, 1881. The shooting occurred less than four months into his term as president. Charles J. Guiteau was convicted of Garfield's murder and executed by hanging one year after the shooting. Chester Arthur becomes President of the United States.

Mrs. Marie W. Bourgarde, 68 years old, of 2 Bevier court, died at 1:25 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in Binghamton City hospital. She is survived by her husband, Francis J. Bourgardel three daughters, Mrs. William Drachier of Greene, Mrs. John Dundon of Port Dickinson and Mrs. Jules Seneck of Binghamton two sons, Lester F. Bourgarde of Floral Park, N.Y., and Henry Bourgarde of Binghamton a sister, Mrs. C. A. Jasse of Middletown, Conn. several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was a member of Christ church, Beulah Rebekah Lodge, L. A. F. M. auxillary to Canton and Pythian Sisters. The body was removed to the George H. Scholdere home for funerals, 269 Chenango street.
