Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Mrs. Bessie Strine Bourgarde, age 100, died July 16, 2001. She was a resident of Campbell Stone Apartments in Buckhead. She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne M. Salter (Mrs. Winfield O. Salter) of Atlanta, two granddaughters, Dayna Salter-Smith of New Orleans and Carrie Campbell of Houston and three great-grandsons. Funeral services will be held in York, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Bourgarde's birthplace. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to The Hospice Atlanta Center, 1244 Park Vista Drive, Atlanta, GA 30319. H.M.
