The German Evangelical Lutheran church - In 1859, when the Protestant German population of Pittsfield was about 400, arrangements were made by a portion of them for devine service in their own language. These services were first held in private houses, and with occasional visits by clergymen from New York. But in April, 1859, Rev. Augustus Grotrain, a learned and able minister of Albany, accepted a call, and organized the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Pittsfield. The town subsequently granted a pleasant site in the corner of First street burial-ground, where the church was erected, at a cost of $2,274.00 and which was dedicated September 14, 1865. There present pastor is Rev. John D. Hagar.

Her maiden name was Augusta Joanna Thinert, one of the eight children of August and Joanna Thinert. She was married Feb. 7, 1883 in Springfield to Caspar Bader, who survives her. Eight children were born to them, who are living. They are Edward of Covington, Ky., George of Fort Humphries, Va., Mrs. Anna Strangford and Charles Bader of Boston, Mrs. O. R. Thayer of Florence, Mrs. J. H. Pratt, Mrs. A. B. Brouillette of Easthampton and Mabel at home. There are eight grand-children; also three brothers and one sister, Herman of Netcong, N. J., William and Edward of Providence, R. I., and Mrs. Fred Slade of Bristol, Ct. Mrs. Bader was a very attractive woman, a neighbor and mother whom it was a pleasure to know.
