NOTE: I found this and it might be a very helpful clue to figuring out more about Marie Berchtold Pelton. If anyone has any information to add, please contact us or leave a comment below. Thanks!

"...My great grandmother's certificate of residency of Langweid Germany, written in German and translated that says: Rosina Berchtold born 10-29-1859 who was single at the time of 6-6-1890 resided with her daughter Marie Berchtold born 2-5-1889 in Langweid, Germany. I am unfamiliar with what this document represents other than that it is the way that they did a census at the time?

I originally thought it might be a birth certificate except that the date of record, 6-6-1890 is over 2 years after Marie's birth. So I concluded it must be some kind of census record. If anyone does know what it is I'd love to know!

Marie at the age of 2 or 3 years old was sent to the USA alone, and was brought up by a family called Pelton in Connecticut; I used to know where but cant seem to remember possibly Somers or Windsor. Marie arrived with only a bag of her personal belongings and clothing and her certificate of residency, and later ended up with the name Pelton. The story is later told (and I don't know how this information was obtained) that her father, Joseph Berchtold, arrived in New York when Marie was a girl looking for his daughter. He never found her. I do have Marie Berchtold Pelton Blessing's death ertificate, it fails to show her mother's name but does show her father as Joseph Berchtold and that this information was provided by my grandmother. I did inquire from my grandmother how she got that name.. she didn't remember how she got it but told me the story about his coming to look for Marie. My grandmother is deceased now.

I have searched records for Rosina Berchtold to no avail, I have searched passenger lists for Marie Berchtold or Joseph (or Josef) Berchtold to no avail, I have searched probate records for Marie to no avail. I seems as though these people didn't exist.. but they had to of because I exist.. all I have is that one document of Residency from Langweid... Roberlie"
