Rosina BERCHTOLD was the child of ? and ?Rosina was an immigrant, arriving by 1890.
Rosina arrived in NY USA with her 11 month old daughter in 1890. She was single at the time that she reported her alien status as living in Langweid, Germany on 6-6-1890. I am aware that she lists herself on 6-25-1890 as married or as a "wife". One must decide for themselves what is the 3 weeks of truth between those dates. Rosina lists her surname and her child's as Berchtold. If she was unmarried was this her maiden name or was she divorced within months of Marie's birth? One suspicion I am looking to confirm or deny is that Rosina is one of the Russian Jewish Berchtold's that were taken to concentration camps during WWII. (I understand the year differences, but with this information in toe.. ask yourself, are there Berchtold's in Russia that were Jewish?) Since many in WWII were, we have to assume yes. Furthermore the Pogroms against Jews was at height during the time that Rosina (IF FROM RUSSIA) would have had to flee for her life. Bodies of killed Jews were being piled. If she fled for this reason I'm sure she must have been aware that for decades many Jews were fleeing to the United States for their lives. IF she was a Russian attempting to do this.. she would have likely gone to Germany (or Austria or other places we see Berchtold's Family might be there to help).. and then we see she leaves for Amercia. WHERE, she leaves her daughter with friends of the family (Thelma Blessing's words) The Peltons who brought her up. Rosina I'm afraid is still lost to me on this day 8-8-2020. I have no marriage, death or anything after she arrives. Without that one piece of paper, the Residency Certificate in Langweid, Marie almost could not exist. There is NOTHING about Rosina BEFORE that Residency Certificate nor after.. And Joseph to date has been nothing more than a story. Having come when Marie was young looking for her and never did find her. It was understood that rumors got to the family that he was inquiring. Then nothing more. Rumor was that Joseph Berchtold, Marie's father, was looking for her. Much research and I can not determine who Joseph was. AND being that his name was Berchtold was Rosina not single? Or was she of the same last name? Did Joseph lie and he was an uncle maybe on Rosina's behalf? So many questions lead to the one question I just want answered: Who are Joseph and Rosina Berchtold and were they Noble People and most of all.. from where? There is a wonderful story to be heard here.. I sure hope we uncover it before I'm gone! Thank you everyone for your help!
