"...Our city has come a long ways since it was first granted on December 31, 1771 by Colonial Governor John Wentworth as the small village, named Maynesborough, after a man by the name of Sir William Mayne from London, England.

Maynesboro was first settled in 1824 by William Sessions and Cyrus Wheeler. The small township was later incorporated as the town of Berlin with the help of Thomas Wheeler, who was also the father of Cyrus. With only 65 inhabitants, most of them from Shelburne, New Hampshire and Gilead, Maine, Berlin was in the farming industry..."

1842 - June 11 - A late season snowstorm struck New England. Snow fell during the morning and early afternoon, accumulating to a depth of ten to twelve inches at Irasburg VT. Berlin NH was blanketed with eleven inches of snow during the day.
Snow whitened the higher peaks of the Appalachians as far south as Maryland.

1896 - Big Plant is Burned
Berlin, N. H. Sept. 21 - The lumber mills, cabinet factory, grist mills and considerable lumber, owned by the Berlin Manufacturing company, were destroyed by fire Saturday night. The burned buildings covered a large area the railroad depot. A large number of men will be thrown out of employment. The loss is about $50,000, and is partially covered by insurance. The fire caught near the engine room, probably from a hot box.

Berlin, N. H. Dec. 13 - During a fire that damaged the dwelling house of J.D. Lary to the extent of about $15,000, Xavier Arslneault, a boarder, while attempting to save the household goods, was overcome by smoke and died a few minutes later.

1907 - THEATRE BURNED OUT.
Berlin, N. H. Nov. 25. - The interior of the Albert theatre building, a four story brick block of modern construction, was burned out. The fire started in the rear of a furniture store and communicated with the stage of the theatre by an air shaft, spreading from there under the floor of the theatre to the front of the building. The loss is estimated at approximately $100,000. The cause of the fire is unknown.

1908 - FIRE LOSS OF $400,000 Blaze at Berlin, N. H., Wipes Out Eight Business Buildings
Berlin, N. H., Feb. 5. - With the thermometer at 20 degrees below zero, eight buildings in the heart of the business district of this city were destroyed last night, causing a loss roughly estimated at about $400,000. The fire was not declared under control until it had practically burned itself out after burning for five hours.

The blaze started in the four-story brick Green block, the largest structure of its kind in the city. The Berlin fire department was utterly unable to cope with the conflagration. The one steamer of the department broke down at the very outset of the fire, and until help came from Portland and Lewiston Me., the only streams played upon the fast increasing conflagration were two feeble hydrant streams that dribbled on the fire at a distance of fifty feet with force not sufficient to break a pane of glass. Some sick tenants in the Green block had narrow escapes from their homes.

Berlin, a banking city of Coos co., N.H., on the Androscoggin River and on the Boston and Maine and the Grand Trunk Rs., 98 miles NW. of Portland. It has pulp- sod paper-mills, etc. Pop. in 1900, 8886. The river has here a tumultuous course through a narrow pass, descending nearly 200 feet in the coarse of a mile.
