East Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut, USA
The part of the land Known as East Hartford was once inhabited by the Podunk Indians, in 1635 the town saw its first permanent colonists when Thomas Hooker and his followers came from Cambridge, Massachusetts to found Hartford. The east side of the Connecticut River was at that time part of Hartford. Initially settled about 1640, early settlers included William Goodwin, Thomas Burnham and William Pitkin.
The first petition by residents to establish a separate Town aprt from Hartford was rejected by the General Assembly in 1726. Several more petitions were submitted between that year and 1783, when the Assembly at last gave its approval to the incorporation of East Hartford. The Town then received its Charter from the State of Connecticut on the land area taken from the City of Hartford.
East Hartford is home to aerospace manufacturer Pratt & Whitney.

Hartford county. This town is situated opposite to Hartford, and connected to it by a bridge across the Connecticut river. The soil of the town is generally fertile, but the alluvial meadows on the border of the river, of which there is a large tract, is of a superior quality. The agricultural products of this town are very considerable. Hackanum river furnishes the town with a good water power, on which are valuable manufacturing establishments, particularly of paper. East Hartford is noted for its manufactures in former years. The first powder mill in this country, it is said, was erected here in 1775. Anchors, mill screws, nail rods, gunpowder, paper, snuff, and glass were manufactured here in 1784. The early settlers found the ferocious and warlike tribe of Podunk Indians in this neighborhood. EAST HARTFORD, Conn., May 28. - Fire early today badly damaged the Garvan block here, with a loss estimated at $50,000. The building is owned by Crescent and Rebecca Lodges, I. O. O. F. The fire started in the rear of a grocery store. The Hartford Fire Department assisted in fighting the flames. Frank Driscoll, a volunteer fireman, was painfully injured.

For more than a century, the land east of the river was part of Hartford. The town was incorporated in 1783. The first town meeting was Dec. 9 of that year, in a meetinghouse near where Main and Pitkin streets now meet. East Hartford, consisting of 18.7 square miles, has a population of 49,575. The town was connected by bridge to Hartford in about 1810.
The Hockanum River passes through the middle of the town from east to west, feeding into the Connecticut River.
The town has a nine-member council that sets the budget and passes ordinances and a mayor who has the power to appoint personnel.
Pratt & Whitney, part of United Technologies Corp., is the largest company and employer in town.
