Among the younger merchants of Pittsfield who have won recognition as men of superior business capacity, the gentleman whose name introduces this narrative may be appropriately numbered. He was born in Pittsfield, January 16, 1876, son of the late George W. and Ida (Mills) Edwards, the former a native of Laconia, New Hampshire, the latter a daughter of the late Josiah Mills, who was a prominent lawyer of Chatham, New York.

The late George W. Edwards was a soldier in the Civil War, serving as first lieutenant in the Twelfth Regiment New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. Locating in Pittsfield, he purchased Washington Root the jewelry business that had been established by the latter in 1848 at No. 44 North street, and this business was continued bye Mr. Edwards at the location named during the remainder of his life, becoming the leading industry of its kind in Berkshire county. 1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

1953 - On July 27, 1953, the Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice agreement at Panmunjom. This ceasefire halted the conflict between North Korea, supported by China and the Soviet Union, and South Korea, backed by United Nations forces primarily from the United States. The agreement established the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) near the 38th parallel, effectively maintaining the pre-war boundary and creating a buffer zone between the two Koreas.

'Pittsfield, July 28 - Private funeral services will be conducted for Mrs. Ann Amelia Edwards, widow of George W. Edwards, who died early yesterday morning at her home, 26 Paisley Terrace.'

'Mrs. Edwards, the former Ann Amelia Crouse, was born in this city, moved to Agawam as a child and was educated in that town. She studied voice in New York and for many years was soloist in Springfield Churches, principally in Hope Congregational Church. Upon her marriage, she returned to this city where she was a member of the South Congregational Church.'

'She leaves one daughter, Mrs. Priscilla (Edwards) Fitch of this city; a brother, Charles T. Crouse, and several nieces and nephews.'
