Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

'Charles T. Crouss, 93 of Suffield St., Agawam died Monday morning in the home of his son, Theordore A. Crouss of 156 Heywood Ave., West Springfield. Born in Pittsfield, Aug. 8, 1867, the son of the late George and Augusta (Vogel) Crouss he had lived in Agawam for the past 75 years. Mrs. Crouss was the owner of a dairy farm and was a well-known milk dealer with routes in West Springfield and Agawam for more than 60 years. He retired 10 years ago. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Agawam. Besides his wife, Mrs. Fannie (Kathan) Crouss and his son Theodore, he leaves another son, George W. Crouss of Agawam, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the Curran-Jones funeral home Wednesday. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Agawam. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m. Friends who wish may make contributions to the memorial fund of

'The funeral of Charles T. Crouss of Suffield St., Agawam was held Wednesday at the Curran-Jones funeral home. Rev. Benjamin T. Lockhart, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Agawam officiated. Bearers were Charles, Edward and Theodore C. Crouss, Jr., and John and Theodore Cesan and Orvil Wilson. Burial was in Center Cemetery in Agawam where Mr. Lockhart conducted the committal service.'
