The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Elmer Carl Hopfner, 83; former bank official

Elmer Carl Hopfner of Sarasota, Fla., a former vice president of Hartford National Bank in Hartford for 50 years, died May 31. He was 83. Hopfner was born in Manchester Nov. 26, 1904, and had lived in West Hartford until moving to Florida in 1969. He was a member of the First Church of Christ Congregational in West Hartford. He leaves his wife, Lillian Hopfner, a son, Richard L. Hopfner of Norwell, Mass.; a sister, Edith H. Buckman of Sarasota, Fla.; and a brother, Raymond Hopfner of Sarasota, Fla. Services were held June 2 at 3 p.m. in the Ivy Chapel of Jackson and Lew Funeral Home, Sarasota, Fla.
