Society and Clubs White chrysanthemums and gladioli decorated the altar in First Melhodist Church on Wednesday for the marriase of Miss Sally ,Ann Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Johnson of Briarwood Rd., West Hartford, to Mr. Richard Lee Hopfner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer C. Hopfner of Glenbrook Rd., West Hartford. The 4 o'clock ceremony was performed by the Rev. Loyd Worley, and Mrs. Edgar Wahlberg provided the nuptial music. The bride was given in marriage by her father, and was attired in a princess line gown of silk peau de soie, designed with a bateau neckline and Victorian double puffed sleeves. The full skirt was accented with a soft bow in back and terminated in a chapel train. Her veil of English illusion fell from a Victorian bow of matching silk peau de soie, and her cascade bouquel was of chrysanthemums, stepha-notis and ivy. Miss Karen Jean Johnson attended her sister as maid of honor, and the bridesmaids were Miss Barbara Henry of Ridge-wood Rd., and Miss Anne Cos-tales of the Boulevard, both in W est Hartford. They, were identically gowned in short sleeved dresses of peacock blue satin, styled with .bateau necklines and bell shaped skirts...

1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Obituary

NORWELL - Richard Lee Hopfner, 66, of Norwell, a graphic designer, died Wednesday at home of melanoma.

He owned Richard Hopfner Studio Inc. of Abington for 38 years.

He was an Army veteran.

He was born and raised in Hartford, Conn., and lived in Norwell for 26 years.

He was a graduate of William Hall High School in West Hartford, attended Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., and graduated from the New England School of Art in Boston.

He is survived by his wife, Sally A. (Johnson) Hopfner; a daughter, Robin L. Watson of Henrietta, N.Y.; two sons, Eric S. Hopfner of Newport, Conn., and Adam Hopfner of Guilford, Conn.; his mother, Lillian (Blessing) Hopfner; and a grandson. He was also the son of the late Elmer Hopfner.

A memorial gathering will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the McNamarra-Sparrell Funeral Home, 30 Central St., Norwell. Burial will be private.
