Margaret E. Knight, born on February 14, 1838, in York, Maine, was a remarkable inventor and innovator during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her life story is one of determination, resilience, and groundbreaking contributions to the field of invention.

Margaret grew up in a time when opportunities for women were limited, but her curiosity and aptitude for mechanics were apparent from a young age. Tragedy struck early in her life when her father passed away, leaving the family in financial distress. Despite the challenges, Margaret's mother encouraged her daughter's education and interests.

One of Margaret's first inventions was a safety device for textile mills. At the age of 12, she witnessed a horrific accident in a cotton mill involving a worker being impaled by a steel-tipped shuttle. This incident left a lasting impression on Margaret and motivated her to create a solution. She designed a device that would automatically stop the loom if a thread broke, preventing
