Biography
ALBERT SALISBURY
Albert Salisbury is well known in Peoria as a pioneer railroad man and an honored verteran of the Civil War. He has a record of thirty-nine years' identification with railroading, first as a track foreman, later as a freight conductor and then as a passenger conductor and his service was continuous, with the exception of two years which he spent as a member of Sturgis' Independent Rifle Company. He is now retired from active life and is living at No. 1109 North Madison street. He was born in Scipio, Cayuga county, New York, January 27, 1829, and is the son of Cumins and Harriette (Smith) Salisbury, the former a native of Rhode Island and the latter of New York. The father was a prosperous farmer and secured his first tract of land from the government in 1835.
Mr. Salisbury was educated in the public schools of Hudson, Michigan, and began his active career as a railroad man in 1852, when he obtained a position as track foreman with the Lake Shore & Michigan
From the 1840s through the 1880s, thousands trekked westward, carrying only a few belonging and supplies for the journey, and settling on the western frontier, forever changing the American West.
This was a separate company organized at Chicago, armed, equipped and subsisted for nearly two months by the patriotic generosity of Mr. Solomon Sturgis.
The Company was organized in April 1861, and was mustered into service May 6. It was armed by its patron with Sharpe's rifles. About the middle of June 1861, the Company was ordered to West Virginia to serve as a body guard to General McClellan. The Company reported to General McClellan at Parkersburg and accompanied him in the West Virginia campaign. It participated in the battle of Rich Mountain and marched with General McClellan to Washington, where he went to assume the command of the armies.
Washington was reached on July 26, 1861, and the Company did guard duty until March 10, 1862, when the 'forward march' was ordered. It accompanied the General on the march upon Yorktown and during the siege of that place, thence into the seven days battle of the Chickahominy. At the close of the campaign

Albert Salisbury, the oldest conductor in point of service in these parts, resigned yesterday and will be seen on the T.,P. and W. no more. He concluded he had run long enough and quit of his on volition to take a rest. he had been on the road since 1864, coming here from the Alton, where he had run a train during the war. For a short time he was roadmatser, cut as he did not like this work returned to the train service. Salisbury was a jovial man, who loved to joke, and who knew every man, woman and child in the towns along the line. He will be greatly missed by them and the traveling public. - Peoria Star.
