Jean Hamel was born around 1652 in St-Aubin d'Avremesnil, Normandy, Seine-Maritime, France. Son of Charles Hamel and Judith Auvray, he married Marie-Charlotte-Christine Gaudry-Bourbonnière, daughter of Nicolas and Agnès Morin, on February 16, 1677 in Quebec. From this union were born 12 children. Arrived in the country in 1662 accompanied by his parents, his brother Charles, his uncle Jean and his aunt Marie Auvray, he settled in Lotbinière. In 1681, he was a farmer in Lotbinière and owned 2 guns, 6 cattle and 23 acres of land. The date of his death, which occurred before July 7, 1707, remains unknown.
