The city is located 17 km southwest of QUÉBEC CITY on the South Shore of the St Lawrence River and to the west of Rivière CHAUDIÈRE. It is a thriving residential suburb of Québec City, linked to the city of SAINTE-FOY, on the opposite shore of the St Lawrence, by the Pierre-Laporte suspension bridge and the old, cantilever Québec Bridge.

The old parish of Saint-Nicolas, settled in the last quarter of the 17th century and founded in 1694, takes its name from an old Normandy parish, Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Ferté. Saint-Nicolas, which had a population of 700 at the end of the 18th century, was set up as a parish municipality in 1855. It became a town in 1962...

  • 1668 - Saint-Nicolas founded
    The history of Saint-Nicolas dates back to 1668, the year of the founding of the parish of Saint-Nicolas, which makes the current district one of the oldest localities in Canada. In 1694, the seigneury of Lauzon was created.

    by the regulation of Sept. 20, 1721, confirmed by an order in council of Mar. 3, 1722, extends 3 leagues and 17 arpents in front from the R. Chaudiere to fief Baudouin in the S. of Tilly; and by the same order the church, cemetery, presbytery and garden for the cure were directed to be placed, pursuant to the wishes of the inhabitants, on two superficial aprents, given for the purpose by Jacques Beaufort; besides which Sieur Charest voluntarily gave 4 arpents in front by 40 in depth. - In this S. are several fiefs abutting on the St. Lawrence, among which are those called Ursuline, Jesuits, Vilmai and Maranion.
