Biography
HAMEL - from the Germanic 'haim' which means 'home, hearth'. Or, diminutive of the old French 'ham' which means 'small village' and designates a group of isolated dwellings (a hamlet).
Charles Hamel was born between 1624 and 1627, in Saint-Aubin d'Avremesnil, in Dieppe in Normandy. He is the son of François Hamel, the name of the mother not appearing on any document. He probably arrived in New France in 1656 with his brother Jean. Around 1650, he married in Avremesnil, Judith Auvray who would not come to Canada. From this union was born in France, in 1652, a son named Jean who will make the crossing with his father. On June 19, 1656, he married Catherine Le Maistre with whom he had another son, Charles, born in 1659. In 1662, the family settled on the Côte Saint-Michel in the seigneury of Sillery, where the father receives an area of sixty acres of land from the Jesuits, to add another fifty acres in 1663.
