L'Ancienne Lorette, Québec
The history of L'Ancienne-Lorette goes back to 1674, when the Jesuit Pierre Chaumonot (1611-93) built a chapel on this site for the HURONS who had been forced to flee their homeland (Ontario) by the Iroquois. The original church of L'Ancienne-Lorette, Notre-Dame-de-l'Annonciation, was set up as a mission in 1698, the year following the departure of the Hurons, who had moved northwards, closer to their hunting grounds.

1673 - November 4 - Blessing of the Chapel of the Hurons at l'Ancienne-Lorette.
Naturally, like the entire region before the arrival of the French invaders, the territory of L'Ancienne-Lorette was the place of residence of the Amerindians. Much later, at the time of New France, the Jesuit Father Pierre Chaumont had a first chapel erected there in 1674, which was on the site of the current cemetery. This chapel was to help in the evangelization of the Hurons. grandquebec.com

1882-84 - Lorette
...About five miles to the northwest of Quebec is the Indian viilage of Lorette. Every Charter for the settlement of La Nouvelle France repeats in substance the words of that granted by Richelieu to the Company of the One Hundred Associates, the object of which was "to endeavour by Divine assistance to lead the people therein to the knowledge of the true God, to cause them to be disciplined and instructed in the Catholic, Apostolic and Roman faith." In fact the earlier settlements were as professedly missions as trading enterprises. The idea of a regular colony on a large scale did not take shape till the time of Louis XIV, under whom, as his hereditary title of Most Christian Majesty demanded, the interests of religion were by no means a secondary consideration. The Hurons were the first fruits of missionary devotion... The old church is shown with much pride, for the Hurons are good Catholics. The school is another of their sights. The children sing with a vigour suggestive of a... Read MORE...
