Born in South Manchester, Connecticut, from 1829 Cheney worked as an engraver of small portrait heads and book illustrations in Boston. In 1833 he travelled to Europe to study art and continued engraving for American publishers. However, facing a lack of interest in art in America at the time, he abandoned printmaking whilst still young.
