The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Mabel (Alderman) Horn, 88, of 5 Orchard St., died Sunday in a Williamstown nursing home.
In 1958, she and her husband developed and operated Horns Beach on Hoosac Lake in Cheshire. She operated the business until 1972.
She assisted her husband and father-in-law in the management of a farm machinery business, several farms, and rental units.
Earlier she worked as a secretary at the former Renfrew Manufacturing Co., and as a bookkeeper for Philip D. Powers garage and for her father, Archie L. Alderman, at his garage.
She was born in North Adams, moved to Adams as a young girl, and graduated from the former Adams Senior High School in 1923.
She was a member and former trustee of the First Baptist Church, served on the business and finance committee and was president of the Ladies Aid Society. She was an honorary member of the Adams Arts and
