Mabel Horn, at 88, managed beach, farms: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Mabel (Alderman) Horn, 88, of 5 Orchard St., died Sunday in a Williamstown nursing home.

In 1958, she and her husband developed and operated Horns Beach on Hoosac Lake in Cheshire. She operated the business until 1972.
She assisted her husband and father-in-law in the management of a farm machinery business, several farms, and rental units.

Earlier she worked as a secretary at the former Renfrew Manufacturing Co., and as a bookkeeper for Philip D. Powers garage and for her father, Archie L. Alderman, at his garage.

She was born in North Adams, moved to Adams as a young girl, and graduated from the former Adams Senior High School in 1923.

She was a member and former trustee of the First Baptist Church, served on the business and finance committee and was president of the Ladies Aid Society. She was an honorary member of the Adams Arts and Crafts Club and a former officer of the former Spanish American War Veterans Auxiliary.

Her husband, Robert H., died in 1962. She leaves two sons, Robert L. of Delmar, N.Y., and Walter J. of Virginia Beach, Va.; three daughters, June H. Lamb of Cheshire, Joyce H. Fletcher of Ballston Spa, N.Y, and Janet H. Bleil of Cheshire; a sister, Paulene Hall of Pittsfield, 15 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Jean H. Boynton, died in 1988.

A memorial service will beheld in the church on Wednesday afternoon. Burial services will be private. There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, or the First Baptist Church of Adams. The Dery Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
