"Catherine Barre, a young woman protected by the king, arrived in the country in the summer of 1664, it seems. She was the daughter of Jacques Barre and of Francoise Gauvrite, from Saint-Martin-de-RE in Aunis, diocese of La Rochelle. Catherine was a serious girl about 20 years old. Maurice Rivet, a lad from La Rochelle, spoke to her of marriage in the autumn of 1664. However, ancestor Rivet found serious competition in the person of Mathurin Chaille and gave up his marriage contract on 17 November of the same year. Mathurin courted Catherine until she accepted and decided to be united with im in the gonds of matrimony."

"At Beauport, on Tuesday, 30 December 1664, the house of Jacques Lamarie and of Marie Morin, his wife and Catherine's chaperone, was filled with visitors in their Sunday clothes... Notary Vachon read aloud Mathurin and Catherine's marriage contract. Everyone witnessed these civil promised drawn up according to the Coutume de Paris. The bride signed with elegance."

"In the chapel of Beauport, on Sunday, 11 January 1665, Father Charles de Lauzon, Sieur de Charny, blessed the union of Mathurin and Catherine in the presence of witnesses recorded in the registry of Notre-Dame de Quebec: Jacques Lemarie and Pierre Marcoux, residents of Beauport."

'Mathurin Chaille was born about 1637 at Sainte-Radegonde-la-Vineuse, today Marsais-Sainte-Radegonde, diocese of Maillezais, in Poitou, arrondissement of Fontenay-le-Comte, in the Vendee...We are unaware of Mathurin Chaille's life before his arrival in New France. He was not educated. A circle with a dot in the middle served as his mark and signature. One day Mathurin decided to improve his fate by trying his luck in America. In what year did the son of Jean Chaille and Jeanne Bouillaut travel up the Saint Lawrence? According to Marcel Trudel, Mathurin appeared here for the first time as witness to a survey on 20 February 1658. Thus, Mathurin was certainly in the colony the preceding summer, perhaps even in 1656.'
