1881 - July 2 - James A. Garfield was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C., at 9:30 am on Saturday, July 2, 1881. He died in Elberon, New Jersey, two months later on September 19, 1881. The shooting occurred less than four months into his term as president. Charles J. Guiteau was convicted of Garfield's murder and executed by hanging one year after the shooting. Chester Arthur becomes President of the United States.

Obituary

Mrs. Mary Riter Knapp, wife of Charles Knapp died suddenly at her home in Darien Center on Sunday, March 29th. Mrs. Knapp had been taken ill the previous Thursday noon and died as she was being assisted into an auto which was to convey her to a hospital. She was born in Sheldon December 15th, 1876, the daughter of Peter and Lena Logel Riter and besides her husband is survived by one son Floyd Knapp of Darien, three
Sister: s, Mrs. Charles Shaw of Buffalo, Miss Julia Riter of Buffalo, and Mrs. Edward Riter of Sheldon, also four
Brother: s, Frank Riter of Varysburg, John Riter of Johnsonbug, Peter Riter of Strykersville and Wm Riter of Buffalo.
Funeral services were held the following Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the Roman Catholic church at Darien Center. The Rev. M. A. Ansett of Buffalo, a friend of the family officiating. Interment in the Catholic cemetery at Darien.
