SOUTHBRIDGE - Miss Joan Evelyn Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo G. Baker of 42 Sayles St., became the bride of Robert F. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Davis of 22 Emmett St., Marlboro in St. Mary's Church yesterday morning.

Mrs. John Crowley of Shrewsbury was martron of honor, and bridesmaids were Mrs. Richard Baker, Mrs. Fred Dunford of Millbur and Miss Carolyn Snyder of Webster.

Leo Labrache of Marlboro was best man. Ushers were Richard and Bruce Baker, Fred Dunford of Millbury and Socrates Kontoyianis of Marlboro.

A reception was held at the Dudley Country Club, Dudley.

1941 - Broken Leg
June [should be Joan] Baker, 9, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Baker of 42 Sayles street, was admitted to the Harrington Memorial Hospital today suffering from a fractured lower left leg. While walking home from church yesterday morning, she slipped off the curbing on Ash street, near her home. Not thinking she was hurt, she walked home, but was taken to the hospital this morning when X-rays were taken and etermined her injuries.

1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

1953 - On July 27, 1953, the Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice agreement at Panmunjom. The agreement established the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) near the 38th parallel, effectively maintaining the pre-war boundary and creating a buffer zone between the two Koreas.

The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

The scandal led to the discovery of multiple abuses of power by the Nixon administration, the resignation of President Nixon in 1974, and the indictment of several administration officials.

Northborough - Joan E. (Baker) Davis passed away suddenly at home on March 24, 2016, due to heart complications. She was 83. She leaves behind her children, Scott R. Davis of Northborough and Pamela E. Hite of Shrewsbury; her two grandchildren, Nicole A. Hite and Alyssa E. Hite; her brother, Bruce S. Baker and his wife Sylvia of Southbridge; cousins, nieces, nephews, and many beloved friends. She is predeceased by a brother, Richard L. Baker. Born and raised in Southbridge, Joan was the daughter of the late Leo and Evelyn (Feige) Baker. Joan raised her family in Northborough and lived there for 50 plus years. Joan graduated from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Worcester in 1953. Following graduation, she practiced nursing at Memorial until the 1970s. She was a Supervisor of Nurses at Westridge Health Care Center in Marlborough and later held the position of R.N. Director of Admissions at Lachance Center in Gardner.
