The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. NORTHAMPTON - Mrs. Rachel A. (Smith) Childs, 76, of 94 Maple St., Florence section of Northamppton, native of Philadelphia, Pa., and long time resident of this area, died Sunday in Cooley Dickinson Hospital. She leaves two sons, Robert, of Northampton and Willliam of Leeds; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Emery of Florence, Mrs. Ernostine Caldwell, of Suffield, Conn., and Mrs Mary Carroll of Florence, with whom she lived; a
Brother: , Ernest of Rockport, a
Sister: , Mrs. Mary Bartlett, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at Childs funeral home Haydenville. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Florence.
