"According to church records, Albert was buried in this cemetery near George Baker. Albert died at 42 years of age of spinal meningitis. He was buried in a plot owned by William Baker. Albert was buried in the plot along with William's wife, Rosanna."

"There was one headstone with no readable information. According to church records, this was probably George Baker and I have attached the picture to his entry. George died in 1936 and is buried in a plot owned by Mary Campbell. There is one other Campbell in the immediate area."

"The location of both George and Albert is next to the stone wall surrounding the chapel. Mary Smith is the headstone that George is bured next to and Albert was buried in that immediate area though exactly where is unknown."

NOTE: Is Mary E. Campbell the same person as Mary E. Robarge in the 1900 census (see above). Did she marry a Campbell? If so, she is living with Philip F. Brady in the 1910 US Census in Kent County, RI.

Purgatory, Sutton, Mass., 1906

Legend says that the chasm was created by the devil in response to an Algonquin Indian woman killing a white colonial settler.

Historians say that the legend actually served a religious purpose in the colonists’ efforts to Christianize Native Americans.

Geologists believe that a mile-high glacier let loose a gush of dammed-up water some 14,000 years ago, leaving the walls intact but carving out the 70-foot-deep chasm.
