When Robert Alence graduated from Boston College in 1951, he looked forward to launching what would be a successful career in business and to a marriage that would eventually bring seven children.

Among the Boston College graduates to be honored at the Sept. 27 Alumni Achievement Awards ceremony are (clockwise from upper left): Robert Alence, '51 (Religion), Margot Morrell, NC '74 (Arts and Humanities) and Ileta Sumner, Law '90 (Law).

The Brooklyn native and World War II veteran never imagined that he would also spend 25 years as a Roman Catholic deacon, including eight years as a chaplain in one of Massachusetts' toughest prisons.

Fifty years after receiving his diploma, that diaconate service has earned Alence the Boston College Alumni Association's Award of Excellence in Religion. The prize will be presented during the annual Alumni Achievement Awards ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. in Robsham Theater...

Robert William Alence of Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts (formerly of Wellesley, Massachusetts) passed away peacefully at home on June 13, 2021 at the age of 94. He was born in Brooklyn, New York the son of Richard Alence and Beatrice (Thienert) Alence. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Anne M. (Flynn) Alence.

He enlisted in the naval air gunnery school after high school and served in the Navy in World War II as a first class seaman in the Pacific. He was an army first Lieutenant in the Korean War. He graduated from Boston College class of 1951. After the war, he worked as president of Dingley Contracting Company in Natick, MA, until 1962 when he became self-employed as a management consultant and licensed public accountant. From 1966-1987, he worked as General Manager at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton. He began participating in lay ministry in 1964 at St. Paul’s Parish in Wellesley, MA.
