1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. 1953 - On July 27, 1953, the Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice agreement at Panmunjom. PITTSFIELD Mrs. Mary E. 'Betty' Rhinehart, 77, of Wahconah Heights died yesterday morning at Hillcrest Hospital, Born in Pittsfield on July 1918, daughter of the Everett J. and Mary Madden Fraley, she attended local elementary schools and was a 1936 graduate of St Joseph's High School Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Rhinehart was employed by Eastover Resort in her early years. She was a commmicant of St Charles' Church. Her husband of 40 years, Henry B. Rhinehart, died Oct. 26, 1976. She leaves four daughters, Mrs. Carol F. Houghtaling, Mrs. Barbara L. Nyland and Mrs. Christine M. Scott, all of Tampa, Fla., and Mrs. Cheryl A. Rieke of Lee; 15 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
