1881 - July 2 - James A. Garfield was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C., at 9:30 am on Saturday, July 2, 1881. He died in Elberon, New Jersey, two months later on September 19, 1881. The shooting occurred less than four months into his term as president. Charles J. Guiteau was convicted of Garfield's murder and executed by hanging one year after the shooting. Chester Arthur becomes President of the United States.

Death Comes to G. Ernest Humphrey - Was Ill Long

Proficient as Mathematician and Patron of Wholesome Sports.

George Ernest Humphrey, 29, died this morning shortly after 7 o'clock at the home of his father-in-law, Jacob Gimlich on Columbus avenue. He had been in failing health for a year, but it was not until a week ago Monday that he gave up his duties and took to his bed. Death resulted from spleen trouble.

Mr. Humphrey was bon in this city August 29, 1878 and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Humphrey. He attended the public school and was graduated from the high school in 1895. After completing his studies he entered Pontoosuc mill for the purpose of learning the woolen business, but his health did not permit hi to continue in that business and he was given a position as bookkeeper, under the direction of his father in the office at the mill.

He was of a very studious nature and became very proficient in keeping the company's accounts. His methods were of his own invention for the most part and were held as models for
