At Vicksburg he was transferred to Co. K and was in command of the company when General Pemberton surrendered Vicksburg to US forces commanded by General US Grant on July 4, 1863.
His brother-in-law was Captain Victor Joseph Maurin, commander of the Donaldsonville Artillery that fought in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Maurin was a member of President Jefferson Davis' party when he was captured by federals in Georgia.
