Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Seventy-Five-Year Old Auburn Woman Dies at Hospital

Mrs. Ethel Chase Spencer, 75, of 60 Pleasant St., Auburn, the wife of Ralph Spencer died Tuesday night at the Central Maine General Hospital after a short illness.

She was born in Lewiston, Jan. 30, 1886, the daughter of Fred A. and Lily Furbush Chase, and was educated in Lewiston schools.

She married Ralph C. Spencer Sr. on Sept 18, 1948 in Auburn. She spent the greater part of her life as a shoe worker and retired several years ago. She lived in Lewiston and Auburn all her married life and attended the Court Street United Baptist Church.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Thomas H. Oates of Lewiston; two stepsons, Ralph C Spencer, Jr. of Auburn, and Roger A. Spencer of Lewiston; and a grandchild.
