While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Eleanor (Bissonnette) Learned, 94, of Fenwood Vista, formerly of Stafford Springs, died Tuesday, (May 2, 2000) at her home. She was the wife of the late Howard C. Learned, born April 15, 1906 in Stafford Springs. She attended Mt. St. Joseph's College in Hartford. In Stafford Springs, she was educated in the local schools, she was a piano teacher, and for St. Edwards Church, a choir director and organist. After moving to Old Saybrook in 1968, she was an organist for St. John's R.C. Church,member of the Old Saybrook Music Society, and the Quilting Club of Old Saybrook. She is survived by a son, Richard Learned of Hilton Head, SC; a daughter, Ann Harford, of Ellington; three grandchildren, Edward Learned of N. Stonington, Lisa Evangelisti of Old Saybrook, Laura Martel of Old Saybrook; and eight great-grandchildren.
