Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Obituary
Richard Learned of Stonington died at the age of 85 on Friday, July 7, 2023, after a short illness. He was born in Stafford Springs, CT on February 8, 1938, attending local schools and Avon Old Farms. After receiving a degree Dick starting his teaching career in Avon, teaching mathematics and coaching football. Eventually he started his administrative career at Cutler Junior High as assistant principal for many years. For recreation he enjoyed fishing, bird hunting, attending baseball games and water sports.

After retirement they moved to Hilton Head Island, SC enjoying the beaches, golf, and traveling throughout America and Europe. Twelve years ago, Dick moved back to Stonington to be with family and friends.

Dick leaves a son, Edward (wife Belinda), and two daughters, Lisa Evangelisti, and Laura Martel (husband Rock), along with 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

He also leaves a sister, Ann Harford of Ellington, and Monkey the wonder cat.
