Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Obituary
DARTMOUTH -- Fern (Wolschendorf) Bachman of Dartmouth died Friday, August 4, 2006 at home in the loving care of her family. She was the wife of the late George Bachman. She was the daughter of Arthur and Emma Wolschendorf, and the sister of the late Gloria Hey.

Mrs. Bachman, who resided in Fairhaven for most of her life, was a graduate of Fairhaven High School and of Kinyon Campbell Secretarial School. She attended U Mass Dartmouth where she received her accreditation as an Early Childhood Educator. She was lead teacher at the Jewish Community Center Nursery School for over twenty years.

She joined her husband in his love of the outdoors. They climbed most of the mountains in the Northeast, where they also camped and canoed. For over sixty years she enjoyed playing bridge with the Bridge Girls. She was an avid gardener and a life long learner. Her greatest joy was her family.
