1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Obituary

NEW BEDFORD -- George Bachman, 86, of Fairhaven, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Fern W. (Wolschendorf) Bachman.

Born in New Bedford, son of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Wunschel) Bachman, he spent his youth in New Bedford before moving to Fairhaven 60 years ago.

He worked for Revere Copper and Brass early in his career and then was a civilian employee of the Coast Guard, where he received many citations and awards for his innovative suggestions on improving navigational aids, especially pertaining to the lighthouses in the 1st Coast Guard District.

Mr. Bachman was a former member of the First Congregational Church of Fairhaven. He was also a Mason, a member of the George Taber Lodge, A.F.&A.M. in Fairhaven, and the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.

He was an outdoor enthusiast who loved to hike, having climbed most of New Hampshire's peaks. He explored and canoed the rivers of New
