* He had gone into the country for a baby delivery and realized that his appendix had burst but would not leave the mother until the baby was born. By the time he returned to Rivière-du-Loup and entered the hospital, it was too late. He died without having seen his wife as the Sisters who ran the hospital would not let her into the ward as it was a ward for men only and after all she was a woman. But then who, if not the Sisters, looked after these men.
