Our Berkshires
WHEN MY FRIEND Walter White and I chance to motor along Barker Road in the vicinity of the Pittsfield Airport, Walter is inclined to heave a nostalgic sigh. For the airport is located on a portion of what used to be an 85 - acre farm, once owned by the Berkshire Brewing Assn., and Walter has found memories of the time when, as a youth, he assisted in haying operations thereon.
The present runway of the airport occupies the site of a big meadow where Walter assisted, years ago, in harvesting a bumper crop of hay. His duty it was to operate the horse-drawn hay rake to get the hay ready for loading and storing in the loft of the barn on the farm.
THE BREWERY, founded by Walter's father, the late John White, and the late Jacob Gimlich, was then in full operation, turning out lager, ale and malt extract, all famed for their high qualities. Thirty-five horses were used in those days to draw the big brewery trucks, and the farm fitted nicely into the plant...Read full story

W.G. White dies at 90
Walter G. White, 90, of 392 Columbus Ave. died at Hillcrest Hospital Thursday night, following a short illness. Mr. White and his 1929 Model A Ford sedan, which he bought new Aug. 28, 48 years ago and is still running today, were a familiar sight on Berkshire County highways. For years, Mr. White and the late Clarence A. Crandall, an Eagle reporter and columnist, used to tour around the county in the car which they affectionately called 'Little Henry.'
Mr. White was born in the big white house at the corner of Onota Street and Columbus Avenue, which later served as the Second Congregational Church until the present one was built.
He was the son of Rachel Gimlich White and John White, owner of the Berkshire Brewery Association. After he graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1907, he went to work for his father in the brewery, of which he was a stockholder.
He thought he wanted to retire early, so that he would be...Read full story
