"Dozens of church-registered interethnic unions were a significant factor in the making of the Acadian community. One of the first marriages tooke place in 1635, when twenty-two-year-old Francois Gatrot married Marie, a Mikmaw woman."

"Francois Gautrot, whose surname also was spelled Gautreau, Gauthreau, Gotro, and Gottreau, born probably at Martaizé, near Loudun, south of the Loire valley in France, in c1613, and his first wife, Marie, whose family name has been lost to history, were among the first French settlers in Acadia, reaching the colony aboard St.-Jehan in 1636. They had two children, a daughter, Marie, born probably in France in c1636, and a son, Charles, later called l'âiné, born at Port-Royal in c1639, one of the first French children born in Acadia. Daughter Marie married into the Potet and Dupuis families."
