Discovering the Ancestry of François GAUTROT (GAUTREAU): Events, Photos & Historical Records

Biography
GAUDRAULT/ GAUDREAU/ GAUDREAULT - softened contraction of GAUTREAU, itself, derived from GAUDIER, which comes from the Germanic name WALDHARI, composed of 'wald' which means 'to govern', and 'hari' which means 'army'.

François Gautreau would have landed at La Hève (Nova Scotia) on September 8, 1632 with Isaac de Razilly and three hundred elite men. In 1634, he would have taken for wife a Native American named Marie, by whom he had two children, Marie and Charles. He married in second marriage with Edmée Lejeune around 1645. She will give him nine children, four daughters and five sons: Marie, Jean, François, Renée, Marguerite, Claude, Charles, Jeanne and Germain. The family then settled in Port-Royal where we find it during the first Acadian census of 1671. In the 1686 census, François and his wife lived with their son Claude. The ancestor François died in Port-Royal before the 1693 census.

From homepage.ntlworld.com/ pitretrail/ myline/ paternal/ FGautrotEL.htm:

'The founder of this family in Acadia was François Gautreau, a young Frenchman from the Poitou region of France who migrated to Acadia around 1632 with the group brought by governor Issac de Razilly. His first wife was an Amerindian of the Micmac nation who is known only by her Christian name, Marie. She died around 1640, leaving two children, Marie and Charles, born around 1636 and 1638. Charles moved to Charlesbourg, Quebec, where he married Françoise Cousin in 1665. There were other Gautreau families, from other lines, who settled in Quebec during the 17th century, including those of Gilles Gotereau and of Nicolas Gautreau, both from the diocese of La Rochelle in France. Around 1645 François Gautreau remarried Edmée Lejeune. She was originally from the Poitou region and was twelve years old when she accompanied her parents to Acadia. Edmée gave a second family of nine children to François. He had settled...Read MORE...
