The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Sam Centers, 90, died Sunday, January 14, at his Paintsville residence after an extended illness.
Born Oct 2, 1888 in Floyd County, son of John and Mary Blair Centers,he was a retired painter and miner and a member of the First Freewill Baptist church, Paintsville.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Hazlett Centers; four daughters, Mrs.Herbert Arms, Hager Hill, Mrs.Glenn Webb, Southside, Mrs.Campbell Underwood, Porter,OH, and Mrs.Franklin Lancaster, Frankfort;two half-sisters, Mrs.Willie Yates, Williamson,WV, and Mrs.Belle Duncan,TN; a half brother,John Centers,Thealka;
31 grandchildren,29 great grandchildren,and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan 17, in the First Freewill Baptist church, Paintsville, with Revs. C.C. Hall and Norman Roberts officiating.
Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville with Jones-Preston Funeral Home handling arrangements.
