The following is quoted from page 1557 of 'The Children of Pride':

ASBURY HULL (1797-1866), lawyer, legislator, and planter, son of Hope Hull and Frances Wingfield, was born in Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia, on January 30th, 1797. His father has been called 'the father of Methodism in Georgia'; a native Virginian, he settled in Wilkes County, Georgia, organized the Washington Academy, and taught there until 1803, when he removed to Athens and became an active trustee of the University of Georgia, then in its infancy, Asbury Hull graduated from Franklin College (Athens) in 1814. For forty-seven years (1819-1866) he was secretary and treasurer of the University of Georgia; he was also for many years a trustee. He served in the state legislature as both speaker of the house and president of the senate; he was a member of the state secession convention meeting in Milledgeville in January 1861.
