Felix Gatineau came to town from Ste. Victoire, Quebec, Canada, in 1875, aged eighteen, to work in the Hamilton Woolen Mills, and went into the grocery business on Elm Street. His influence was greatly felt during this period as he encouraged others of French-Canadian descent to become citizens and undertake their civic duties. He had served for 10 years as Overseer of the Poor and was elected Selectman three times. He was to go on to a career in the state legislature to which he was elected in 1906, 1920, and 1926. He is represented in the library by his History of French-Canadiens in Southbridge.
