Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.
Obituary
Mass for Sebastian A. Fischer, 82, of 424 N. Lloyd St., a carman for the Milwaukee Road for 47 years, will be said at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Mr. Fischer died Friday, Feb. 27, at Americana Nursing Center.

He came to Aberdeen in 1900 from Seiz, Russia, where he was born Aug. 18, 1887, and married Anna Kraft Jan. 4, 1909. He belonged to the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen. He retired from the Milwaukee in 1952.

Surviving are his widow, six sons, Andrew, Salem, Ore.; Phillip, Midlothian, Ill.; Nick of Aberdeen; Anton and John, of Ontario, Ore.; and Stephen, of Oak Forest, Ill.; four daughters, Mrs. Edward (Barbara) Vendel, Mokena, Ill.; Mrs. John (Josephine) Wade, Norfolk, Va.; Mrs. John (Margaret) Recia, Vale, Ore., and Mrs. Clarence (Caroline) Huettl, Baine, Minn.; three brothers, John, of Vancouver, Wash., and Andrew and Stephen, of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. Kathryn Pitz...Read full story
