Alphonse  DESJARDINS

Alphonse Desjardins, born in 1854, and Dorimène Roy, born in 1858, were a visionary couple from Lévis, Quebec. Alphonse, initially a journalist, became inspired by the cooperative movement after witnessing the struggles of the working class. In 1900, he founded the first credit union in North America, la Caisse Populaire de Lévis, which later evolved into Desjardins Group, one of the largest cooperative financial groups in the world.

Dorimène Roy Desjardins played a crucial role in the establishment and success of the Desjardins movement. She was the first caisse populaire (credit union) manager and, along with Alphonse, worked tirelessly to promote the cooperative model as a means of providing financial services to ordinary people.
