Biography
Born on January 11, 1885, in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, Alice Stokes Paul came from a Quaker family, and that background would greatly influence her later commitment to social justice.
Alice Paul's journey into activism began in her college years. She earned a degree in biology from Swarthmore College in 1905 and then pursued postgraduate studies in sociology and economics at the University of Birmingham in England. While in England, she became involved with the suffragist movement, working alongside Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters, who were at the forefront of the British suffrage effort.
Returning to the United States, Paul earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1912. However, instead of settling into an academic career, she dived headfirst into activism.
