In 1785, at the age of 14, Clark joined the Virginia militia and began his military career. He later served in the regular army and became a second lieutenant. During the Northwest Indian War, he served under General Anthony Wayne and gained valuable experience in frontier warfare.
Clark's most famous expedition, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, took place from 1804 to 1806. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase and find a practical route to the Pacific Ocean. The expedition aimed to establish diplomatic and trade
