Biography
MARCY, William Learned, a Senator from New York; born in Sturbridge (now Southbridge), Mass., December 12, 1786; attended the common schools and Leicester and Woodstock Academies; graduated from Brown University, Providence, R.I., in 1808; taught school in Newport, R.I.; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1811 and commenced practice in Troy, N.Y.; served in the War of 1812; recorder of Troy 1816-1818, 1821-1823; editor of the Troy Budget; State comptroller 1823-1829; associate justice of the State supreme court 1829-1831; elected as a Jacksonian to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1831, until his resignation on January 1, 1833, to become Governor; chairman, Committee on the Judiciary (Twenty-second Congress); Governor of New York 1833-1839; member, Mexican Claims Commission 1839-1842; Secretary of War in the Cabinet of President James Polk 1845-1849; resumed the practice of law; Secretary of State in the Cabinet of President Franklin Pierce 1853-1857; died in...Read full story

Recollections of Wm. L. Marcy
It is said to have been remarked by Mrs. Marcy, since the death of her husband, that it was a few only who understood the character of Mr. Marcy on all its sides. His lofty integrity, his discriminating judgment, his inflexibleness of purpose, his thorough patriotism - these were all patent to the world, and were recognized and understood. But there was the social side of his character, known only to those admitted toh is friendship; and the domestic side, known to number still more limited, in which he displayed a genial humor, and a warmth of affection, for which the world failed to give him full credit. It was my fortune to know him on these sides of his character, and my recollections of him have the warm coloring determined by such an acquaintance. Brown Graduate for Whom Adirondack Peak Was Named
People of Southbridge, Sturbridge, Dudley and Oxford are intensely interested in a campaign waged by New York politicians to change the name of Mt. Marcy, the highest peak in the Adirondack Mountains, to Mt. Victory, and the proposal is meeting with protest and opposition from thousands of New York people, writes the Southbridge correspondent in the Worcester Telegram.

The great peak was named for one of Southbridge's most eminent sons, Hon. William Learned Marcy, formerly United States Senator from New York State, a member of the Supreme Court of New York, and one of the most influential men of his time. He was a grandson of Moses Marcy and one of the founders of Southbridge.

Moses Marcy bought a tract of land from Capt. Peter Pappillon, the famous sea captain who was instrumental in the capture of Capt. William Kidd, the chief pirate of the Spanish main, in his day.
