In 1650, the year after Lady Ann Arundell's death, the County separated from St. Mary's and "erected" into its own jurisdiction and became the 3rd of the 23 Maryland counties.
Anne Arundel County was originally part of St. Mary's County in the southern portion of the Province of Maryland which had first been settled by the arriving settlers in 1634. Between 1654 and 1658, the County was known as "Providence" by many of its early settlers.

On March 25, 1655, during the English Civil War, the Battle of the Severn, the first naval colonial battle ever fought in America was fought in Anne Arundel County
on the Severn River between Puritan forces supporting the Commonwealth of England and forces loyal to the Lord Proprietor, Cecilius Calvert. The Commonwealth forces under William Fuller were victorious.

1854 - Ann Arundel
Ann Arundel, a county in the central part of Maryland, on the West shore of Chesapeake bay, about 5 miles S. from Baltimore, has an area of 430 square miles. The Patapsco river forms its boundary on the N. and N. E.F the Patuxent on the S. W., and the eastern part is traversed by South and Severn rivers. The surface varies from undulating to hilly ; the soil is generally fertile. Wheat, Indian corn, oats, tobacco, hay, and butter are the staples. In 1850 it produced 925,448 bushels of corn, (more than any other county of the state excepting Prince George;) 360,923 of wheat; 147,263 of oats ; 4,523,340 pounds of tobacco, (more than any other county excepting Queen Anne,) and 170,600 pounds of butter. It contained in that year 2 cotton factories, 3 iron furnaces, and 2 paper mills. There were 82 churches and 3 newspaper establishments; 1283 pupils attending public schools, and 270 attending academies and other schools. Anne Arundel, a county in the central rt of Maryland, has an area of about 400 square miles. 1: is bounded on the N. by the Patapsco River, which separates it from Baltimore, on the E. by Chesapeake Bay, and on the W. by the Patuxent River. It is partly drained by the Severn River. The surface is hilly or undulating; the soil is mostly fertile. Among the minerals are red sand stone, serpentine, and iron ore. The staple products of the soil are tobacco, Indian corn, and wheat. It is traversed by the Annapolis, Washington & Baltimore and the Annapolis & Baltimore Short Line Railroads, which converge at Annapolis. Capital, Annapolis. Pop. in 1870, 24,457; in 1880, 28,526; in 1890, 34,094.
