The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Cohostesses at the party were Miss Eleanor Hopkins and Miss Vera Whipple.

1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

Ellen K. Andrews, 103, formerly of Afton and Johnson City, died on July 14, 2005 in Lake Worth, Florida. She was the last surviving child of George and Bessie Kolb. She was married to Wilfred Andrews predeceased her in 1978. She is survived by her two step-daughters, June and Robert Purtell, Betty Lou and Frank Sanzo, all of Florida; nieces, Grace Clark, Johnson City, Clara Fenstemacher, California, Marie Kolb, Johnson City; nephews, Karl and Nancy Brigham, Apalachin, Ivan and Judlthann Kolb, Binghamton; 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. She was a 2nd grade school teacher, starting in 1922 in a one room schoolhouse, and also taught at Westover for 14 years and George W. Johnson until she retired in 1959. She was an avid golfer who loved to travel.

A funeral and committal services will be held on Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the Barber Memorial Home, Inc., 428 Main Street, Johnson City. The Rev. Margaret Chauncey will officiate. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park....Read full story
